CEA: Integrating newcomers
The Canadian Education Association (CEA) has released a new document in the Facts on Education series, titled What is the Best Way to Integrate Newcomer students into School and Classrooms? [pdf]
The one-page document, authored by the CEA and Faculty of Education at the University of Quebec @ Montreal discusses 3 main points:
- Implementing a welcoming protocol that (1) documents students path before arriving at school; (2) prepares class to receive the student (3) helps student adapt to the new school)
- Conduct a detailed assessment of prior learning and provide linguistic support
- Help parents understand the school system
I am sure that most school in large urban centers have similar programs in place, but this provides basic info none the less. Note that this also complements the CEA’s latest issue of Education Canada all about immigrant students.
