Rights of the child
Recently I was doing a book display at an Equity conference for TDSB teachers and Unicef was one of the other displays. I had forgotten that they provide curriculumresources, many available in PDF format ready to be downloaded. Here are some pages with good education resources: Unicef, OSLA: Be the Change, Me to We (the library also has the Kielburger book Me to We: Finding Meaning in Material World), and the Canadian Coaliton for the Rights of Children.

Textbooks and why we don’t collect them
Teachers often ask the Professional Library for classroom textbooks, blackline masters and teacher guides. On the one hand this seems like a perfectly legitimate request especially if your school is missing copies, or if you want to see an older or newer edition, or if you are an LTO and you want to get ahead of the students on that first day.
But think about it. If we get the grade 4 math text from Pearson or Nelson or Prentice Hall or whichever publisher, then we’ve to get all the grade 4 math textbooks that are used across the system. Then we have to get all the texts from all the publishers for all the subjects for both the elementary and secondary panels. And we’d have to purchase every new edition that is published. We’d need a heckuva big budget and a lot of floor space, neither of which we have.
So the bad news is that we don’t collect any and there is no TDSB central textbook collection. You want to hope that your principal will puchase what you need. Failing that, I suggest that teachers go to the Math or Science or whatever subject conference on TEL and do an APB (all points bulletin) and ask if anyone can help you. You never know, there maybe someone who has what you need and is willing to share it.

CultureSource for Canadian teachers
CultureSource has links to a collection of CSC (Curriculum Services Canada) approved units and teaching resources for Canadian elementary and secondary teachers. The resources support a wide range of cultural areas like, social studies and history, literature and the arts. It’s worth a look.
