Open access journals 2
DOAJ is the Directory of Open Access Journals and it links to scholarly full text journals. It has a subject tree > Social Studies > Education > and you can see the journal titles included in this catagory. It includes Canadian open access journals and has an advance search screen function. A great way to look for articles in multiple open access journals.

Open access journals
Open journals are online journals, often created at a scholarly post secondary level. Instead of publishing traditionally in print, everything is done transparently online. An interesting article to read is 7 things you should know about Open Journals; it is an easy to read overview, listing pros and cons. The one con it does not mention is control from the perspective of the librarian – these articles may not ever get indexed in the traditional education databases, and it becomes yet another place to remember to search for information.
A Canadian application is the Public Knowledge Project (UBC and SFU) and has a ‘harvesting’ feature that allows you to search different open journals. Another place to search for reserch information. Very cool and is likely a trend that will continue to grow.

Curriculum Links
Are you looking for online aids to support the Ontario curriculum?
Link to Learning is good for K – 12 and is organized by curriculum subject. Each subject has links to appropriate Internet web pages.
The Ontario Educational Resource Bank is also good for K- 12 and contains resources created by the Ministry and teachers from across Ontario to support the different units for each of the subject strands. It is password protected. TEL has listed the password for TDSB teachers, or you can call the Library and I can provide it.
Caution. Remember there is not always something for everything. It canbe hit and miss.

Daily Physical Activity (DPA)
In 2005 the Ont. Min. of Ed. announced that K – 8 students must take part in a minimum of 20 minuted of sustained moderate to vigorous DPA. In eworkshop, there is a DPA module with video instruction and demonstrations of a variety of exercies for you and your students to do in the classroom, the gymnasium or outdoors. Anne Virtual Agent can be your guide.
TDSB has produced a handy guide titled Chair Aerobics for DPA (2006). It inlcudes 3 sections: warm-ups, main set and cool-down exercises. Copies have been sent to each school, and TDSB schools and teachers may purchase additional copies for $3.00 each. Phone (416) 395-6571 or email curriculumdocs@tdsb.on.ca.

Literacy and numeracy for elementary teachers
The eworkshop is a great online resource sponsored by the Ont. Min. of Ed. and TFO-TVO. It includes links to full text Ministry documents, videos of model lessons, activities you can use in your classroom and printable worksheets. It is cool to to have print resources, videos resources and online links all in one location – very integrated - you don’t have to go elsewhere to obtain the materials ‘cos it is all there at your fingertips. It is the way to go.

Applied Behaviour Analysis and Autism
On May 17th the Ontario Min.of Ed. released Policy/Program Memorandum No. 140, providing direction to school boards to support their use of ABA with autistic students. The Library will purchase books about ABA, but in the meantime we have many, many books about autism spectrum disorders and we can always email you articles on this topic.
